Chemical attack! 11 year old boy, 1 month old baby, dozens injured

It’s a damn good thing the use of chemical weapons is forbidden under international law.

Mosul, Iraq: An unknown substance is responsible for severe skin problems and a respiratory infection in an 11 year old boy in this latest terror attack. A one month old baby was also injured in the attack, the extent of the injuries unknown at this point. The children were victim of two separate mortar attacks in east Mosul. Other victims reported nausea and a “foul chemical smell” in the air.

ICRC Middle East director Robert Mardini has said that the blistering on the victims’ points to a chemical agent. He also stated that the victims were suffering vomiting, coughing, irritation, and redness of the eyes.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack as of yet although the mortars rained down on the town from the west. That area is under Islamic State (IS) control who is responsible for at least 51 other incidents since 2014 of suspected chemical warfare. A full third of those occurring in and around the small town of Mosul according to the UK based IHS Conflict Monitor.

Many say the IS are merely pawns in the game run by the Syrian government who is also suspected of several chlorine gas attacks throughout the country’s six year long and counting civil war.

Should the international community take a harder stance against countries that use chemical weapons?
