10 and 4 Year Old in ICU From Poisoned Apple Juice at Pennsylvania Buffet
Two children have been poisoned by an unknown substance that was in contaminated apple juice at the Star Buffet & Grill in Pennsylvania.
10 year old Richie Zaragoza was just trying to enjoy his birthday with his 4 year old sister Ginaya Mendoza when the two were sipping some apple juice from the buffet at the boy’s party. Within minutes the young girl began vomiting and Richie screamed that his throat was burning and began to throw up blood according to the children’s mother Virginia Davis. The children were taken to Hershey Medical Center where they have been placed in ICU and are under observation.
The exact make up of the poison as well as it’s origins are still questions that need to be answered in an ongoing investigation of the incident. The only compound definitively identified in the juice was methanol which is a commonly used organic solvent that can cause metabolic acidosis, neurologic sequelae, and even death, when ingested.
4 year old Ginaya is no longer sedated but her brother Richie is and remains responsive according to their father Richard Zaragoza who has been by the boy’s side.
