Japan: animal rights groups criticize pet cafés, claims of cruelty

A disturbing trend in Japan are “pet cafés”. This is where animals such as owls, lizards, rabbits, dogs, etc. are “kept” the café and “provided” as an “attraction” for customers. Sounds nice right? Maybe they’re saving a dog or two, maybe there’s a few cats with a new home (that won’t end up on any menus). These things are surely good. Oh, excuse me a second…

“hey assholes, owls don’t like to be held captive indoors with strangers constantly touching them!”

Sorry, that was required! Some people. It ain’t all about you jerk. Listen, like I said, I think perhaps the idea of a place that takes in some cats or dogs of the streets, feeds them, and gives them a home I’m all for it as long as there’s no abuse whatsoever. It’s actually a great idea if done right. Owls? No way to do owls right. It’s one of many types of animals that are popping up in pet cafés throughout Japan that do not belong indoors, held captive in that situation. People apparently don’t care because they are selfish and just “really want to pet an owl” despite what you tell them. So unusual I know and rare, people are usually consistently caring and nice (stop laughing).

Many in the animal rights community are trying to raise awareness of the recent crop of pet cafés that have been popping up in the east that are using animals that are not suited to indoors. In the owl’s case they are making claims that owls do not like to be tethered indoors and could suffer mental abuse with long lasting problems for the animal with so many constant encounters from different humans in a short amount of time.

This only makes sense to us. We’re not supposed to “keep” things inside that don’t want to be. Cats, dogs, rabbits even… totally seem to be cool with it and they can split when they want in most cases. They are our family. These pets are not treated as family. They appear unfortunately to be being treated as inventory for customers amusement.

Decide for yourself what you think of places like the one in the video below.

Do you think pet cafés should be banned in your country?
